Cindy Lou – Vocalist | Gospel, Spirituals, Blues & American Roots Music
Philadelphia native Cindy Lou is a soulful vocalist whose musical journey is deeply rooted in the Baptist church, where she has been singing for most of her life. Drawing from the powerful traditions of gospel, spirituals, blues, and African American roots music, Cindy Lou brings warmth, history, and heartfelt storytelling to every performance.
Her musical work has also played an important role in veteran communities. In 2012, Cindy Lou helped create and launch the Veteran’s Got Talent Band at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The following year, she became a member of the Montrose, New York VA Hospital Veteran’s Band, where she has continued performing since 2013.
Since 2015, Cindy Lou has served as a spirituals vocalist for the Peekskill Underground Railroad Tour, using music to help bring the stories, struggles, faith, and resilience of those who traveled the road to freedom to life. Her performances honor the enduring significance of the spiritual as both an expression of faith and an important part of African American history.
In 2018, Cindy Lou performed as a vocalist with The Phil Young Experience Band, further expanding a repertoire shaped by gospel, jazz, blues, and soul.
One of Cindy Lou’s special artistic passions is celebrating the music and legacy of legendary blues singer Bessie Smith. Through her program “Cindy Lou Sings Bessie Smith,” she has performed Bessie Smith’s music at Bessie’s Place and at various venues, paying tribute to the emotion, strength, humor, and unmistakable spirit of the “Empress of the Blues.”
Whether singing sacred spirituals, gospel favorites, or the timeless blues, Cindy Lou performs with an authenticity shaped by a lifetime of music, community, history, and faith. Her voice carries forward the traditions of the singers who came before her while making each song uniquely her own.
